Description

Victorian Animal Skin Toy Horse on Metal Wheels This toy horse was probably manufactured in Germany during the late Victorian period. He stands about 11 inches tall and about 9 inches from nose to tail. It has admittedly seen better days but considering it was made to be played with it has withstood the test of time relatively well. Please look closely at all the photos as there is some damage to the both the reins, saddle and harnesses etc and the horse itself. A pull along toy horse in a walking position mounted to a timber platform which is inset with four, cast-iron spoked wheels. The body is covered in brown and white (skebald coloured) animal skin, probably in calf hide with brown tail, probably made of cow's tail hair. The horse has a realistically shaped head with glass eyes and painted timber features, black hoofs and a muzzle with flaring red nostrils. The horse is fitted with a leather bridle. The brown leather saddle had adjustable stirrup leathers and metal stirrups (one missing). Skin-covered toys like this horse were the forerunners of the soft toys that emerged commercially in Europe in the late nineteenth century. By the early twentieth century imitation fur was being used, but skin-covered toy horses remained popular until the 1930s. They became uneconomical to produce after the Second World War when the wages of animal skinners increased. Please contact me if you would like to see any specific photos or have any questions.
